This Manager, Database Administrator is a full-time position located in San Diego, CA. The candidate manages the activities and personnel of the Database Administration team. Ensures the operation is in accordance with the established procedures and practices. Monitors performance of support personnel, reviewing response times, problem logs, and trends in problems reported. Recommends strategies and/or hardware/software enhancements to increase employee productivity. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
The manager will have a strong knowledge and hands on support of all database administration duties, including installation, configuration, performance tuning and optimization, database maintenance, troubleshooting, business continuity and disaster recovery. Additionally, the manager will play a key role in facilitating database design for applications in a highly transactional production environment.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
50% - Management supervision and training for the Database Administrators Team – Server Installation, patches & upgrades across standalone & HA Production environments including: Clustering, Replication, and AlwaysOn Availability Groups
Database server installations, patches and upgrades, including both standalone and highly-available environments, as well as Database deployment and testing
Database Maintenance best practices including index rebuilds, statistics, and database consistency checks and Backups, recovery, recovery testing and verification plans
Mentor and cross-train lesser skilled staff members
40% - Hands-on support troubleshooting, resolving, and preventing issues in a Production environment.
Provide reports and metrics to management as required.
Manage complex problems and assigned issues. Maintain rapport with hardware and application vendors, platforms teams, and local systems, network and software engineers.
Configure and document the operating environment and associated infrastructure as well as Future capacity and performance planning
Manage Database performance tuning activities
Manage, schedule and participate in 24x7x365 on call support rotation, as well as evening and weekend maintenance and deployment cycles as needed
Education, Experience & Qualifications:
A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in production Microsoft SQL Server DBA environments.
A minimum of 5 years technical management experience
Strong knowledge of MSSQL(2012/2014/2016), clustering, availability groups, replication, SSRS and SSIS
Experience in a high growth, fast paced environment.
Thorough understanding of database security best practices.
Working knowledge of enterprise storage technologies, (SAN, NAS etc.), server virtualization technologies (VMWare), and disaster recovery techniques.
Excellent conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills.
Demonstrated record of delivering quality customer service.
Strong organization and communication skills; must clearly communicate technical issues and resolutions to customer/clients, other departments and senior management.
Strong writing and documentation skills.
Data Warehousing and Data Modeling knowledge.
Familiarity with Greenplum and/or Postgresql.
