A person dealing with the storage and management of databases is termed a Database Administrator (DBA). A DBA works with Database Management System Software. While seeking career prospects as a Database Administrator, a person is required to be familiar with products related to database management like Structured Query Language, Oracle based database management software, and SAP.

A general Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science or Management Information System is required for seeking career prospects in Database Administration. A Management Information System is generally offered by business schools or colleges and is quite different from computer science programs. Today a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) has become the preference of the employer. In some jobs only 2 years degree is sufficient. Experience in the relevant job is an added advantage.

Knowledge of various languages is definitely an added advantage. Most of the Database Administrators opt to have specialization in one area like MySQL or Access or Oracle. To have easy access in this profession, expertise in more than one type of database helps a lot.

Career prospects in Database Administration are available in workstations, mid-range systems and large mainframe systems. In government, education, banking, data processing and health care, the services of a Database Administrator are required. A Database Administrator is needed in almost every field, but the Computer Industry is the one where largest numbers of Database Administrators are employed. In order to keep pace with technological advancements, hardware and software vendors, employers, universities, colleges and private training institutions offer various continuous training and education programs. As in May 2006 there were 542,000 jobs involving computer scientists and database administrators including about 58,000 self employed, of which 119,000 were database administrators. Database administrators are projected as the fastest growing occupation in the coming decade making career prospects in database administration bright. It is expected that during the decade from 2006 to 2016, there will be a growth of 37 percent in the profession of computer scientists and database administrators. The growth will be driven by the fast growth in designing and related services in computer systems which have been projected to be the fastest growing contributor in the economy of US.
