A Database Administrator is one of the highest paid jobs. Even in the market of fewer jobs or no jobs, DBA's are in demand and have a rewarding career both in financial terms and job satisfaction terms. Database administrators act as the backbone of any IT industry as they are responsible to organize information meticulously so that it can be maintained, updates and retrieved easily. Databases are needed by the industries to store and use information as per the requirement. Just imagine how banks would function without any database related to the monetary transactions.

The most popular database products in the market today are from Oracle, Microsoft, IBM, Sybase and MYSQL. Oracle is the leader in the database market.

Role and responsibilities of database administrators are incredibly diverse and their responsibilities may vary from organization to organization.



There are mostly two types of DBA's in the IT industry: Development Database Administrator and Production Database Administrator.

Development database administrators work closely with the developers and are involved in detail designing of the product, testing and at time reviewing the codes and scripts provided by the developers. On the other hand, the Production DBA is responsible to maintain and check the performance of databases within the organization.

Apart from this the DBA's are responsible for the following tasks:
  • Security management
  • Data replication
  • Installing and upgrading the SQL server
  • Monitor the database server's health
  • Establish backup and recovery for the database.
Database administrators may be required to work with the technical support team to help the clients resolve there queries.

A DBA should have good web programming skills, fair knowledge of HTML and ASP in either VBScript or JavaScript. Well versed in DBMS and the Query language SQL.

Apart from the technical skills the DBA must possess the following skill set:
  • Ability to analyze the requirements of the project
  • Identify the problems and provide alternative solutions to it that is nothing but trouble shooting
  • Should be able to impart training to other employees as and when required
  • Should be able to learn new technologies quickly and implement them
  • Good mathematics and excellent communication skills are always and added advantage.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information technology is mandatory
  • M.I.S is preferable, as a specialization will always add weight to your resume
  • Several vocational courses are offered by colleges these days
Various certifications are necessary to fetch you a well paid job. List of some Industry certifications are as follows:
  • Oracle's DBA
  • Microsoft's MCDBA
  • Master CIW Enterprise developer
  • Security
A DBA's salary may range from $40k to $70k per year depending upon the company.

One of the fastest growing occupations today is that of a database administrator. The more skillful you are, the better are the prospects of becoming an established database administrator. Expansion of the e-commerce industry has led to a tremendous increase in the networking field to facilitate the sharing of information. All this require lager databases to store critical information of the customers and other projects, fueling demands for database administrators with latest technologies.
